Protecting Your Business from the Outside In: The Five D’s of Perimeter Security

When it comes to protecting your business, you’ve probably got your cybersecurity measures on lock-down. Secure payment systems, firewalls to keep hackers out, encryption measures for sensitive information – it’s all a great start to keeping cyber criminals’ paws off your business. But are you sure you’ve done enough to keep thieves out of the physical assets of your business, too?

Cargo theft costs U.S. businesses $30 million each year.

You may think that having a fence around your property is enough, but it’s only enough to stop very unmotivated thieves. If you store expensive equipment, and building materials, or have a large fleet of vehicles with catalytic converters, it’s critical to use layers of protection that stop thieves from walking off (or driving off) with your property.

The Five D’s of Perimeter Security are deter, detect, deny, delay, and defend. Each layer works with the others, providing one obstacle after another to stop criminals from accessing their target – your profits. A truly motivated thief isn’t easy to stop. But a layered approach acts a bit like a runaway truck ramp – slowing down criminals at every step until their attempts grind to a halt, with them fleeing your property or being caught by security or the police.

DETER

Is just having a fence around your property enough? You see, deterrence is all about using psychological tricks to make people not want to access your site. It may look like physical deterrence, but it’s not. It’s a mind game. The goal is to make your property look so difficult to access, steal from, and get away without being caught, that thieves don’t even try in the first place.

In addition to a fence, you can also deter criminals with bright lighting, visible surveillance equipment that lets thieves know they’re being watched, and monitored alarms. Signs other than the 7000V one do not work.

DETECT

For highly motivated criminals, even the best deterrence system won’t keep them out. This is particularly the case when you store valuable goods or equipment at your site. The greater the possible reward for stealing from you, the more risk criminals are willing to take.

Detection comes down to alerting your security personnel or authorities as soon as someone tries to breach your perimeter. This can be done via integrated surveillance camera systems, motion detectors, and a monitored fence line. In addition to sending alerts to authorities, floodlights can send criminals running before they’ve had a chance to touch your valuable assets.

DENY

In the deny layer, unauthorized persons are prevented from entering your business or construction site, while authorized persons are allowed in. This can be accomplished with something as low-tech as a lock and key, to something new-age as biometric technology.

The goal here is to provide an extra layer of security between the threat and your assets, forcing the criminal to find a softer target.

DELAY

If someone has gained access to your site, you want to delay them getting to their target – your equipment or inventory – for as long as possible. This gives the police or your security team time to show up, or it may simply frustrate the criminal so much that they leave the scene empty-handed. Layers of fencing, reinforced areas for stockpiling goods, locking interior and exterior doors, and even stairs can slow criminals down enough to save your valuable equipment and assets.

DEFEND

If criminals make it through all the other layers of security you’ve put in place, your last chance to protect your profits is to go on the defensive. This generally means action by security personnel and/or local law enforcement. The defend layer of protection works best when security and police are alerted automatically when someone attempts to breach your perimeter in the “detect” layer. By having more time to respond, your security personnel and police are better prepared to take decisive action, rather than being caught off guard.
