When it comes to deterring criminals, taking a proactive approach can be one of the simplest measures you can take to protect your business.
In this blog, we outline things you can do to keep your commercial property, site, or yard from being a target. When your buildings, vehicles, and equipment are properly secured, your property will be less tempting for thieves to break in.
DID YOU KNOW?
More than 7 million incidents of property crime are reported each year, averaging a whopping $200,000 each.Surprising fact – a great deal of these are thefts of opportunity!
First Step: Assess Your Vulnerabilities
Every business has vulnerabilities. Yours is no exception. Certain types of security vulnerabilities make your location more prone to crimes of opportunity, such as:
Expensive cargo – For obvious reasons, thieves are more likely to target big-payoff items like catalytic converters or heavy equipment.
Previous break-ins – Having a history of break-ins makes you more vulnerable to future break-ins because 1) thieves who were successful once will try again, and 2) this shows you have security vulnerabilities.
Remote location – With few or no people around at night.
Outdoor storage – Equipment or cargo left outdoors is easier to steal.
Your security measures aren’t “up to standards” – Poor lighting, a weak perimeter security fence, and lack of alarms make your location an easier target for thieves.
The more vulnerabilities you have, the more likely you are to experience a break-in. Knowing where you stand is the first step to keeping the bad guys out and protecting your property against crime, vandalism, and theft!
The Impacts of Commercial Property Theft
You lose a lot more than what was stolen when your business or site is robbed. After a break-in:
- Production slows down – Re-ordering stolen goods, time spent talking to the police and your insurance company, and the general company-wide distraction that happens after a robbery slows production and eats into your profits.
- Insurance rates go up – With every incident, expect your commercial insurance rates to increase.
- Worker retention drops – An unsafe job site rarely attracts top-quality workers.
- Reputation damage – Would you hire a company that’s known for not keeping its location secure, and therefore missing deadlines?
Be Proactive – Examine Your Vehicles Buildings, and
Equipment
When you think of commercial security, you’re most likely thinking of fencing (like an electric one!) video monitoring, and camera and alarms. And, while those are all key parts to keeping your business safe, don’t forget to do these simple things:
Lock up tight – Make sure to CHECK that every gate, door, window, and vehicle is LOCKED UP before you leave for the night.Take your keys – A misplaced keychain is a welcome sign for crimes of opportunity. On average, more than 100,000 vehicles are stolen every year simply because the keys were left inside.Re-key equipment – Here’s a shocking nugget of knowledge that will jolt you! Most heavy equipment comes with generic keys that can be purchased online. Re-key locks as soon as you purchase or install keyless ignition devices so thieves can’t just drive off with your equipment.Install steering wheel and trailer hitch locks – These make equipment more difficult to move.Remove batteries – Not practical for every day, but for long weekends or vacations, it’s worth the extra effort.Install GPS tracking devices – Especially on your high-value equipment.Store indoors – Store smaller equipment inside a building or in locked cages in secure areas.Work with a security partner like AMAROK – We’ve dedicated our lives to helping commercial property owners stop crime from happening. Remove the Opportunity and Thieves Go Elsewhere!
When you take a ‘no stone unturned’ proactive approach to protecting your commercial property, it IS possible to keep the bad guys out (or at least make it more difficult for them to get in). By removing any opportunities for burglars to easily break in and steal from you, they’ll give up and go somewhere else.
